Pratical 9

Through UIR, I've learnt to differentiate between good and creditable websites versus those of less quality. I've learnt about the different types of websites and which websites to choose when doing research. Also, learning about the various resources available for research has been very useful.

UIR has helped me greatly in searching for information for my school assignments. I can find information quickly and accurately.

On the whole, I've gained a lot more knowledge about the Internet and its resources

Practical Worksheet 8

The resource I evaluated was one of the other website I found previously.

Breast Cancer Foundation Singapore
http://bcf.org.sg/index.asp?id=home

This website is very professional and easy to navigate. The information provided is very detailed and creditable. I like the simple but attractive layout.

There were no broken or dead links and loading time was very quick.

On the whole, it was a joy browsing though this website.

The formats for citation and bibliography are really long and tiring to follow! However, I understand that citation is necessary to avoid legal matters and to ensure that the information is creditable.

Practical Worksheet 7

I updated the wiki with information from on another website

Breast Cancer Foundation Singapore
http://bcf.org.sg/index.asp?id=home
The BCF hopes that by raising awareness of breast cancer and encouraging women to screen themselves regularly, breast cancer will be detected earlier and the chances of surviving the disease will be greatly enhanced.

Wiki's are great to find information compiled from all over the Internet.

It saves a lot of time going through different websites and picking out the relevant information.

Because so much information from so many sources are gathered together, it is necessary to cite the sources so that the information is creditable.

Practical Worksheet 6b

I updated the wiki with information on one of the websites I found the previously.

They are:
Singapore Cancer Society
http://www.singaporecancersociety.org.sg

Wikis are not new to me as I have used Wikipedia many times before in school assignments or just to find out stuff.

What is new to me is editing and maintaining a wiki. I never though it would be so simple!

I think wiki's are a great and quick way to find information as well as compile information.

However, because it is so simple, anyone can input information, thus the information found on Wiki's might not be all that accurate.

Practical Worksheet 6a

The topic selected for our group project is " Developments in Research Cancer".

One of the two websites I got from the keyword variation of the research topic is:

#1 Singapore Cancer Society
http://www.singaporecancersociety.org.sg

The Singapore Cancer Society is a self-funding voluntary welfare organization that helps to promote cancer prevention.
Although it is an authoritative website, the information is very brief and no information on cancer can be found. The link to 'Cancer Info' is broken.

I feel that this website is not up to the standard of a reputable organization like the Singapore Cancer Society.

The layout is fine and pleasing to the eye. However, I think if the background color were to be something else other than white, it would be nicer.

Some information is also outdated: cancer focus (was for Oct -Dec 07)

Reflection for Week 3

I feel that getting the correct keywords is very important.

With the correct keywords, I can find the needed resources easily. For example, drug abuse VS drug abuse youth.

I also learnt the differences between the three types of websites. Credible and related information and be found in organisation websites. Subject-based websites can provide me with specific and in-detail information. Personal websites have a wide range of topics and I can find people's thoughts on topics instead of hard facts.

The impact of drugs abuse on youths

Search facilities I used were google and wikipedia.

Keywords that aided my search were "drug abuse", "drug abuse youths" and "drug abuse teens". By adding the words "youths" and "teens", the search results are more specific.

Major differences amongst the three types of websites
Organisation-based websites are done by a group of people. They cover a wide area in a certain topic. For example, the National Council for Drug Abuse covers topics from the types of drugs to where parents can seek help. There is a specific section on drug abuse and youths.

Personal websites are done by one person only. They can cover more than one topic. For example, drugs to fashion.

Subject-based websites can be done by one or many people. They provide information specific to the topic only.

In my search:

Organisation websites
Central Narcotics Bureau
National Council for Drug Abuse

Personal websites
Editorial "Of Drugs and Youth"
NY Center's Blog Spot
Drug Abuse Awareness Blog

Subject-based websites
Teen Drug Abuse

Reflections - Wk2 Pratical

My partner very graciously agreed to let me choose the topic. I chose Grooming - Make-up. Ta-da!

Searching for Newsgroups and discussion lists, and Electronic journals and magazines were pretty easy. A simple Google search listed a plethora of results.

We found local forum CozyCot and international forum specktra.net informative.
Blogs musemedia and makeupbag were interesting reads as well.

Searching for a multi-media source was harder. We had to identify what a multi-media source was first. We considered musemedia as a multi-media source as there were some videos on make-up application available. We feel that YouTube is also a multi-media source. A search for 'makeup' and we found a number of videos on make-up applications.

WWW sites were fairly easy. We listed a few make-up brands and were able to find their main websites through a search engine like google. There were introductions and information to their products and usage instructions.

Here are some brands we googled for:
M.A.C
Bobbi Brown
LancĂ´me Paris

"2 exciting websites"

#1 PINK IS THE NEW BLOG
Pink is the new everything.
Celebrity gossip.

#2 Google
Google is God.
I google almost everything.

Joanne

At a ripe old age of 19 (hello, anti-aging skincare!), I am months away from my Diploma in Communications and Media Management.

I like M.A.C a lot. Favorite things include shopping, M.A.C and being away from the sun.

I am a Mac, die PC.

Thank you.
